SUMMARY:July Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor meeting at Franklin Farm in Cumberland\, RI. Our speaker this month is Dave Wade and will be presenting on his experiment and discovery on getting bees to draw out more comb\, even outside of the traditional months.Dave has been a hobby beekeeper in Sturbridge\, MA for 19 years. His wax adding method has been seen in the June 2025 edition of American Bee Journal\, along with two recent articles in the MA Beekeepers Association newsletter. He has given a number of bee club presentations\, along with an on-line one hosted by Dr. David Tarpy\, of North Carolina State University.Title: Adding Beeswax to Make Honeycomb- A New DiscoveryAdd rolled up pieces of wax foundation to your hives to get the bees to make comb on a frame which only contains a sheet of foundation or to get the bees to complete construction on partially built out frames. I will demonstrate how I got the bees to build comb from this method through late season August and September. I will also discuss my current spring experiment using six spring package hives with added wax rolls looking to see if they build out stronger and faster than control hives. Wouldn’t it be nice if the bees built out significantly more comb.

SUMMARY:May Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The May Membership meeting will be on May 18th (a week later due to Mother’s Day). New beekeeper meeting will be at 1pm. \nThis month’s speaker will be Bill Hesbach who is well known for his research\, publications and presentations on condensing hives. \nThermoregulation and Ventilation \n\n\nThe talk starts with how bees control the internal hive temperature using thermoregulation and what effect that has on the colony. Then\, we discuss convection flows inside a colony as a precursor to understanding ventilation. In the final segment\, I introduce the concept of a condensing colony versus the more common practice of adding ventilation. Participants will better understand what role ventilation plays in a natural hive environment.\n\n\n  \nBill Hesbach is a Connecticut native with a background in engineering. \nHe’s an Eastern Apicultural Society Certified Master Beekeeper\, a graduate of the University of Montana’s master beekeeping program\, and the President of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association. \nBill also operates a side bee business called Wing Dance Apiary in Cheshire\, CT.\, which produces artisanal raw honey and other natural hive products. \nBill teaches bee biology and various beekeeping methods at meetings hosted by regional beekeeping clubs. He is an active member of the Eastern Apicultural Society\, where he participates in the Master Beekeeper Certification program\, and he is a regular guest speaker at regional beekeeping seminars. \nHis special interests in beekeeping include bee biology\, flight\, and the connection between local flora and bee behavior. He’s a published author\, and his articles on beekeeping appear in The American Bee Journal and Bee Culture magazines. \n  \n
